LEAD CHARACTER ROLES

African American ROCKER/GUITAR SLINGER AND SHOW HOST ( MALE )

This lead character is major lead role in the show and onscreen. This character is a cross between Bob Marley/Jimmy Hendrix /Mick Jagger. This character has charisma and swagger. He is a singer rocker and guitar slinger. His is in much of the show and acts as master of ceremonies for the show. He also sings one of the first songs in the musical called “One Drop of Freedom”.

ELVIS/JOHN TRAVOLTA TYPE ROCKER/SINGER ( MALE )

This character is a young singer/songwriter and rocker/guitar slinger. He is a good looking hot shot stud. He is a songwriter but is not actually that smart but the chicks like him even though he is old school bad boy, ( although deep down he is not so hard ). He and his band have come to L.A. hoping to make it big in the music industry. He gets work sorting metal in a junkyard in East L.A. as he and his band do gigs at night. He sings the edgy fun rock n roll dance song “You’re Gonna Be My Little Kitten”.

SLICK POP GROUP ( MALE & FEMALE )

This group is made up of young slick rockers with tight music. This can be all guy band or guy and two girls or two guys and two girls or all girl group. They sing the slick sharp pop tune “Love Done a Hit and Run”.

BOY/BAND OR BOY/GIRL GROUP ( MALE & FEMALE )

These are roles for young actor singers in a boyband or boy/girl group. They sing a song about a young guy at dance club who would not look at a girl because he thought she was ugly. Then she begins to dance and becomes beautiful in his eyes. This is a big dance number. The song is called “She Turned Out a Big Surprise”.

LEAD ACTRESS/SINGER ( FEMALE )

This is a lead role. She plays the part of the young beautiful girlfriend and has to put up with her rocker boyfriend’s macho ego and sexism. Even though he gets out of line and makes mistakes, she forgives him. She is gentle and sensitive on the outside but deep down has a quiet inner strength and keeps her rocker boyfriend in line. She secretly is a songwriter and does a surprise appearance on stage and brings the show to a standstill as she sings her heartfelt tender song “Where Will I go From Here”.

HOMELESS OLDER COUPLE

Male and female couple ( any age ). They are part of the homeless on the streets of L.A. at night. The female is seeking the attention of a homeless man who is afraid of her and she sings a jazz type song as she pursues him late at night on the streets of downtown L.A. The song is called “Eye On You” about two alligators making love in a swamp at night and can be done as a solo or duet. The role is meant to be comedic tongue in cheek humour.

OLD SCHOOL PUNK ROCKERS ( MALE & FEMALE )

These roles require old school punk rock anarchist characters in a band. Think Johnny Rotten/ The Clash/ The Ramones. They sing their sharp, politically scathing, ultra cool punk song “We’ll Be Back”.

DIVA SOUL SINGER ( FEMALE )

Black/American Female or other ethnicity who is a real Diva soul singer. Think a new Aretha Franklyn. Someone with real talent and soul. She has live and has a broken heart even though she puts on a brave face. She is tough and knows about rejection and being excluded. She brings down the house with her soul song “On the Outside Looking In”.

solo, DUET OR BOYBAND OR BOY/GIRL BAND ( MALE & FEMALE )

Solo, duet or boy/band or boy/girl band. Any ethnicity or background is welcome but prefer Asian or Latino for the roles. The purpose of the “Songs of L.A.” is to represent the diversity of the city. They sing a catchy pop ballad “I’m Beginning to Understand”.

RUSSIAN GANGSTER ( MALE )

This character plays the role for a big burly tough Russian Gangster who owns a run down local theatre that the musicians and band want to use for a show. He puts up mean resistance but he has a weakness for music and sings his own song about the Russian mafia called “Lady Kalashnikov.”

RUSSIAN DANCER MODEL ( FEMALE )

Tall glamorous blond. She is a dancer and needs to be able to move really well. She plays the part of the glamorous daughter of a Russian gangster who also performs on stage in the fast piano jazzy song “Lady Kalashnikov.”

HOLLYWOOD GIGOLO ( MALE )

This role is for a young stud Gigolo who loves the company of older women. With all the fuss with the #Me Too Movement the Gigolo advises young guys to ditch the politically correct frosty young women and instead head on down to a fancy bar to pick up a vast array of willing sexy women. He sings and dances the classic new song “Cougar Bar”, to a backing chorus of glamorous older women singers/dancers.

COUNTRY SINGER ( MALE )

The character role is for an old school solid reliable bad boy country singer. He comes from a farm in the midwest and is just visiting L.A. to promote his music. He has a broken heart and sings about heartache and loss in the classic slow dance country song “Restless Heart”.

MIDDLE EASTERN OR/AFRICAN RAPPER ( MALE )

This character is a smart stylish well dressed rapper/hip hop artist with fancy suit and chains and gold watches. He has an entourage around him. He is big drama and performs his rap with authority and style with drummers and belly dancers around him. The rap song he sings is about a really bad guy. Rap song to be announced at later date.

NIGHTCLUB CROONER ( OLDER MALE )

This character is an older male. Think Leonard Cohen with a hat. He is suave and sophisticated. He is a real player and seducer but like all players and seducers he ends up alone. He sings the sad but cool dance song “Feel My Aching Hurt”.

FOLK SINGERS ( MALE & FEMALE )

These roles are for character actors/vocalists to play the parts of a Folk Singers in a Group. Think modern day Peter Paul & Mary or the Mama’s & Papas. This folk group made up of men and women are earnest and sing a song about defending the land and the environment. The Song is called “Old Washington” after George Washington who was a farmer and who fought to defend the land.

CABBIE(S) ( MALE OR FEMALE )

At the end of the show are the last lead characters, the Cab Drivers. They come on stage to offer people a drive home. They say they are being put out of business by Uber and other services. One of the Cabbies has a song about the life of a Cabbie. Its actually a song about a Cabbie who falls in love with a beautiful woman who he takes for a ride. The rousing song closes the show and is called “Morning Cab Home”.
